Welcome to The BuildLabs Architects’ Consortium. Here we bring together a select group of architects who share a belief that design and construction are strongest when aligned from the start. By collaborating early—from concept through completion—the consortium replaces the traditional handoff model with an integrated, team-driven approach. The result is a refined design and better outcomes for clients. This article introduces one of the architects helping shape that vision, Anil Dubé. The architect gives his

For architect Anil Dubé, architecture does not happen in isolation. Instead, success comes when architects and builders work in sync from the very beginning. “When the architect and builder are involved at the initial stage, both understand the client’s aspirations and the budget. Everyone works toward the same goal,” he said.

Mr. Dubé says builders are not just executors, but as collaborators offering practical insights that ground ambition in feasibility. Cost control, constructibility, and transparency are not constraints; they are tools that protect the client’s trust. This approach to collaboration was critical when it came time to work with BuildLabs in creating the construction tech company’s brand new 80,000 sq ft facility in North Carolina.

“A trustworthy builder and a passionate architect,” says Mr. Dubé, “that combination gives the client peace of mind.”

Approaching the BuildLabs North Carolina Facility

When Mr. Dubé first studied the BuildLabs site in North Carolina, context became his starting point.

He observed:

  • The long, linear relationship with Highway 64
  • The surrounding residential fabric
  • Climate patterns, sun orientation, and seasonal temperatures
  • The need for visibility at speed — architecture that registers even in motion for drivers-by

Rather than treating the building as a static object, he approached it as an experience — something perceived over time and distance. By working with BuildLabs from the start, Mr. Dubé was able to refine the design, simplifying forms without losing intent.

And he and the BuildLabs team agreed: “Build it once. Spend intentionally on structure. Prioritize functionality and sustainability.”

In fact, sustainability was central, including the consideration of engineered wood systems like glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT). While initially conflicted about material choices, Mr. Dubé embraced wood’s renewability, performance, and warmth when used responsibly.

As the program evolved — integrating office spaces with the factory and recalibrating façade strategies — adaptability became key.

“Design is conversation. What talks to what? What relates? You must be willing to rethink.”

A Design Philosophy Rooted in Care

Mr. Dubé says travel, observation, and lived experience continually inform his work — from learning how homes handle laundry in different cultures to understanding why certain spatial habits emerge when design fails to anticipate real life.

Looking Forward

For Mr. Dubé, joining an architect-builder consortium like BuildLabs isn’t about promotion or visibility. It’s about alignment.

When proximity, trust, and shared intent exist, collaboration becomes natural. Independence isn’t lost — it’s strengthened.

“It takes time. But when it works, it creates happier teams, better buildings, and better experiences for clients.” And all of the above is, ultimately, what the BuildLabs Architects Consortium aims to deliver.
